Our team knows just how important image clarity is when building out a professional web presence. The last thing you want to see is the dreaded pixelation! We'll talk about images for your website as well as what ArtCloud recommends for best practices.
What is image size? Image dimensions? Image resolution?
It's important to define what image size and how image dimensions and resolution are related when speaking about adjusting image files to get a more defined image.
Image size is the file size and both image dimensions and resolution inform this. This is usually illustrated in KB, MB, or GB.
Image dimensions are the pixel measurements of the file. You'll usually see this illustrated in 2 values, horizontal and vertical: 1920x1080. 1920px is how wide the image is; 1080px is how tall the image is.
Image resolution is the calculated amount of pixels per inch (PPI) or dots per inch (DPI). This determines the image file quality. Most images are between 72-300dpi.
What size images should I upload onto inventory records?
The answer is really dependent on the original file you have to upload. If a file is extremely large (10MB - 60MB), a good rule of thumb is 1200px on the longest edge (whether that's the height or the width) at 150dpi. If the file is extremely small (small image size, small image resolution), it can be dangerous to attempt to upscale the size. This will lead to pixelation. If you do not have access to a larger file, we do recommend uploading the file you have.
What is the file size limitation for uploading into the Manager?
ArtCloud currently limits the total files (multiple images) size for an inventory record at 50MB. You will see an error message if you attempt to upload a file larger than this or multiple files that will hit this block.
I want a large image to span the entire website screen. What size should this be?
When displaying an image in a large way like this, it's important to start off with a large image file to avoid any pixelation. A good rule of thumb is 1920px on the longest edge at 150dpi. It's also recommended to work with wider images or horizontal / landscape type images instead of taller images in a portrait style. Websites are majority viewed on devices in a landscape view.
Please note: Image size is very dependent on the file and how you want to use the image. The above and below advices may not be applicable to your image.
I want images on my Artist Profile pages on my website to be super crisp. How should I ensure this?
Since the ArtCloud Manager shares data to your Website Builder, you'll want to make sure the files are 1200px on the longest edge at around 150dpi.
Can I edit my images in ArtCloud directly?
No, ArtCloud does not offer any image editing capabilities. The platform does offer adjusting the Max Width / Max Height on individual image blocks, but this is adjusting how to display your image file on your website. This does not affect the image file itself.
